Today William and I have driven to Brundels in Millbrook to pick up the piece of steel that will form the centre of the flitch beam. It’s 8 x 200mm x 6.1m. We only need about 5m eventually, but that’s the length it comes in. It weighs about 75kg and cost about £75.

William’s here for half a day. We’re assembling the front frame to get an accurate measurement of the height of the ridge so we can put the pad stone in the right place at the wall end.

The hole for the pad stone and ridge beam is cut with a saw as the light weight blocks are quite soft.

Getting these diagonals on is quite tricky. This is where we’re making a dummy with ridge cut and bird mouth before cutting the actual piece of timber.

Finally the rest of the conservatory will be built. The first thing is to redo some of the brickwork up to DPC which has been badly frost damaged in the five years since it was built. William is now semi-retired and so the job of doing this brickwork is down to Ben, who runs the company now. Neil’s been in on Friday to start removing the damaged bricks. Nipper is just exiting one of the air holes as he’s been investigating under the floor.

Laying bricks. The walls will come to about 200mm above finished floor height. There’s a whole course of blocks which have to be cut down; they are sawn by hand with a brick saw.

While Neil and Ben have been getting on with the block work William and I have been constructing this framework for the joinery company to work to and also to provide a guide for the brickwork.
