Roof

Tuesday 7th February 2012

On Sunday I unattached the electrics from the kitchen and bathroom ceiling joists. William didn’t seem to like that I’d left the tops off some junction boxes and there were live terminals that could be touched.

Now the old joists and ceiling have all been removed and the new joists are going in. There’s a space for a large loft hatch with ladder that I’ve bought.

We are having cold weather and it’s very cold in the house. The kitchen and bathroom are pretty much the same temperature  as the outside.

A cold night. It’s warming up outside quicker than inside. I’ve just had a bath in an air temperature of minus 2 celcius! There’s been ice in the cold water tank and central heating header tank. Last night I mended one pipe which had started to leak and I’ve put more insulation on it.

Rafters poking into the sky. They are left long and cut to length when the position of the ridge is known.

The new roof is being built over the top of the existing, not very well built roof.

A bright, frosty morning. No work today and after an evening of beer with Nick I was woken by sounds of house bashing.

Joists have been added to the new part of the building, penetrating in through the old roof to rest on the new piece of steel.

New joists are double the size of the ones in the old roof.

Having no ceiling makes heating pointless as the heat all escapes immediately and wildly fluctuating temperatures over the past couple of days (an increase of 17 deg C in 24 hours) lead to a situation where it was actually colder in the house than outside. By the time I got round to taking this picture it had equalised. Still a rare occurrence in the winter.
