Heavy, sticky, sucking clay. It has to be scraped off the spade into the bucket.

The hole is nearly down to the right depth now. About two tonnes of clay have been removed and carried one bucket at a time out into the skip.

Rafter ends are bolted to joists with coach bolts. It used to be done with a couple off big nails, but everything’s done better now. There’s a thing with spikes on which goes between the two bits of wood to prevent them sliding on one another too, but I can’t remember the name; it’s something like crab.
