Today William and I have driven to Brundels in Millbrook to pick up the piece of steel that will form the centre of the flitch beam. It’s 8 x 200mm x 6.1m. We only need about 5m eventually, but that’s the length it comes in. It weighs about 75kg and cost about £75.

William’s here for half a day. We’re assembling the front frame to get an accurate measurement of the height of the ridge so we can put the pad stone in the right place at the wall end.

The hole for the pad stone and ridge beam is cut with a saw as the light weight blocks are quite soft.

Getting these diagonals on is quite tricky. This is where we’re making a dummy with ridge cut and bird mouth before cutting the actual piece of timber.
