The first two slabs laid. They’ve been stacked up in various places for nearly 6 years and now it’s time for them to be cleaned up and resume their life as a patio. Fortunately, whoever laid them originally laid them upside-down, so even though they’re probably 50 years old they look quite new when laid the right way up.

Another one laid. Going to mow the grass now, before Nick comes round; we’re going out for some beers in Southampton with Gaz and Tony.

A few more laid before it rains. Off to see Benjamin and Matthew now for a lesson in how to hack your phone and the quadratic equation formula.

Building up the level with concrete. All mixed in the wheelbarrow, which does your back in.

It’s been a baking hot weekend. I’ve made progress laying more concrete, cutting the odd shaped slabs and laying more slabs. Another day or two will finish it.

Another hot weekend and the last of the grouting. A dry 1:4 mix is brushed in, tamped down and smoothed with a 27mm dia socket. I got some grey sand from Sydnams to make the mortar for the grout as I preferred the colour. Going for beers and curry with Neil and Tony tonight.

Finished. Just the edges to be filled in at some point.

Not a bad job. Need to redo the grouting in the near corner as the B&Q sand was a horrible colour.
